Meanwhile, Cairns was awarded his third place medal. ![]() UK Athletics followed suit and Sloan disappeared from the running scene. Despite the evidence against him, Sloan retracted his confession. “Then he eventually owned up to it.” The BBC reported the story and, soon enough, the tale of the marathon bus cheat had been picked up all over the world. “He absolutely denied it initially,” says Cram. Race organiser Steve Cram, the Olympic 1,500m runner, called Sloan. Witnesses clearly recalled seeing Sloan during the last few miles of the race – just not on the course. Then there was the most damning evidence of all. Photographs suggested he was missing from the race with a few miles to go. No other runners could recall him passing them on the trail. In the hours after the race, troubling details about his performance began to emerge. Cairns placed a hand on Sloan’s shoulder. Cairns had exchanged nods with him on the start line this was the first time he’d seen him since. There was no mistaking him: Sloan had a mohican haircut and distinctive tattoos. It was Rob Sloan, the winner of a 10k race held the day before. “Fourth?” He asked a marshal to point out who was third. “I’m thinking, did I hear that right?” he says. As he crossed the finish line, he heard his result called over the PA. “I’m just going to enjoy this,” he decided.Ĭairns held on to his position and finished the race comfortably. He was equally confident that, with a six-minute gap to close, the rest of the field had little chance of catching him. Cairns knew he had little chance of catching the front-runners. Behind him, just passing the 13-mile point, were the chasing pack. As he passed the 14-mile mark, he could see the two leading runners, Ricky Lightfoot and Marcus Scotney, a few minutes ahead on the trail. The disadvantages of the DLG format are that importation of the data to a GIS requires more effort than importing a DRG raster image, and that the DLG data are quite large, sometimes slowing down the screen refresh rate of the GIS software, and that not all data layers are available for all topographic map quadrangles. Manhattan drink8/26/2023 ![]() Straining the Bourbon Manhattan means that it’s almost drink time. The final step is to strain the mixture into a glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry or three. Although we use a shaker, we use a bar spoon to mix the liquids together. In fact, this drink should be stirred and not shaken. You don’t need to use special ice and you don’t need to shake. The third step is to add ice and stir until the liquids are both chilled and combined. We’re equally careful when we pour the liquors. We often use the bottom of our Boston shaker for this step but almost any vessel should work. The next step is to pour the liquors into a mixing glass and add two dashes of the bitters. We carefully measure our bourbon into a jigger so not to waste any of the liquid elixir. We do this with a jigger but you could use a mini angled measuring cup instead. The first step in our recipe is to measure the bourbon and sweet vermouth. That being said, we use a jigger, cocktail strainer and bar spoon when we craft Bourbon Manhattans at home.ĭiscover 10 essential bar tools for home mixologists. This cocktail is one of the easiest cocktails we’ve ever crafted and requires absolutely no special bar tools. Imported from Italy, these Marasca cherries are grown in the Veneto region and are seeped in a luxurious, sweet, rich syrup. When it comes to maraschinos, Luxardo cherries are the gold standard. After Mindi’s mini-meltdown, we finally procured them after an email from our favorite Lisbon liquor store alerted us to their arrival. We mentioned above that we waited to craft a Manhattan at home until we had the right cherries. While not required, we recommend that you do the same. We use Luxardo cherries in our Bourbon Manhattan recipe. Other Italian sweet vermouth producers include Carpano, Cocchi and Contratto.ĭiscover our favorite sweet vermouth cocktails. We use Italy’s classic Martini Rosso in this recipe. Actually, it’s a must in lots of cocktail recipes. To us, using Angostura bitters is a must for its specific spicy, herbaceous flavors. Accordingly, it plays well with the other ingredients and doesn’t overpower the drink. This Kentucky straight bourbon has a relatively low (40%) ABV and a pleasant flavor with hints of vanilla and caramel. We like to use moderately-priced Four Roses bourbon in our recipe. Since bourbon is the star ingredient in this drink, using the right bourbon is key. We use these three liquor bottle in our Bourbon Manhattan recipe. You may or may not agree with this choice… and that’s okay. Since we prefer bourbon’s sweeter flavor over rye’s more spiciness in this cocktail, our recipe features bourbon. Mixologists have a choice between using rye whiskey or bourbon when crafting a Manhattan. These ingredients are whiskey (typically bourbon or rye), sweet red vermouth, Angostura bitters and maraschino cherries. In fact, only four ingredients (plus ice) are required. Sipping a Manhattan reveals a complicated flavor profile that’s actually not complicated to craft. Bourbon Manhattan Ingredients Our Bourbon Manhattan recipe just has five ingredients – bourbon, sweet vermouth, Angostura bitters, maraschino cherries and ice. Regardless of exactly when and where it was invented, the original Manhattan recipe isn’t so different from today’s combination of ingredients. Some historians assert that it was invented at the Manhattan Club in New York City in the 1870s. While historians can definitively trace the pre-prohibition cocktail back to the 19th century, its exact origin is as cloudy as a Dirty Martini.ĭiscover more of our favorite Pre-Prohibition cocktails. After surviving prohibition in the 1920s, it was famously imbibed by Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot in the 1950s. The Manhattan has thrived for more than a century. History of the Manhattan Cocktail If the Manhattan was good enough for Marilyn Monroe to drink, it’s good enough for us too. Alan wake remastered release8/26/2023 ![]() It always has, and it’s that confidence that keeps it positive in the minds of so many. It rewards my patience and hard work with its atmosphere, personality, and charm.Īlan Wake knows exactly what kind of game it is. But every long run or burst of combat inevitably leads me back to why I originally played Alan Wake in 2010. I’m exhausted getting to the narrative bits I love, the game is exhausted by its 11-year age, and, hell, even Alan Wake himself is exhausted by a simple jog. ![]() The DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers also make aiming my weapons without boosting my flashlight much easier than it was originally - the trigger has two stopping points on PS5, with a slight hold aiming the gun and a tight hold focusing your light.Įxhaustion was the theme of my Alan Wake: Remastered play sessions. The primary benefit of playing the game on a PlayStation 5 - which still feels weird, considering Alan Wake was originally an Xbox exclusive - seems to be that it’s easily accessible and has shorter load times. ![]() In other words, there is no mistaking that this is an Xbox 360 game at its foundation. The forests and surrounding backgrounds do look gorgeous, and are better at higher resolutions, but it highlights the rest of Alan Wake’s ugliness by comparison. Character faces don’t emote well at all and cutscenes tend to stutter in certain sections. The Remaster doesn’t do Alan Wake many favors visually, either. Memories of fending off armies of evil birds while standing on a gondola or trying not to get crushed by an evil train all hit me at once.Īlan Wake’s environments always looked good, and the remaster enhances its backgrounds Image: Remedy Entertainment/Epic Games There’s also the way the game’s charming narration sometimes disappears for minutes at a time, or gets interrupted in favor of large-scale battles with the Darkness baddies (called The Taken). Other pain points instantly flooded back when I started playing, like the way enemies often spawn behind you with no noise or signal to warn you. In the modern era, when so many games are confident enough to make combat fleeting in the service of story and tone, Alan Wake feels ancient. But Alan Wake pads each level with dozens upon dozens of enemies, each requiring the same one-two-punch tactic. The light-based combat, where Alan has to lower each enemy’s shield of Darkness by shining a flashlight at them and then blowing them away with a variety of guns, is neat the first handful of times. A good 40% of certain levels consist of just jogging through the woods or down a road, and Alan can only run for about five seconds without slowing down and huffing for air - a relatable trait, from one writer to another, but not the kind of thing that makes for fun gameplay. By today’s standards, it’s a legitimate slog. Let’s get this out of the way up front: The actual act of playing Alan Wake was already boring in 2010. However, its issues are still as glaring as they were 11 years ago, and this remaster does nothing to mitigate them. It’s rife with charm, and overflowing with a mysterious atmosphere, and both are on display in Alan Wake : Remastered more than ever before.
